What counts as CPD for accountants?
CPD (continuing professional development) is structured learning that maintains and develops the professional competence relevant to your role. Most accounting bodies distinguish between two kinds:
  • Verifiable CPD: learning you can objectively prove you undertook, for example a course or webinar with a certificate or attendance record. A minimum number of your hours generally must be verifiable.
  • Non-verifiable CPD: informal professional learning, for example technical reading, that develops competence but is not independently evidenced.
Requirements, minimum hours and the verifiable/non-verifiable split differ between professional bodies and can change, so always confirm the current requirements with your own body (CPA Australia, CA ANZ, IPA). The template works for either category, you simply note which is which.
How to use the template
  • Record each activity as you complete it, not at renewal.
  • Note the date, a description of the activity, the provider, the hours, and whether it is verifiable or non-verifiable.
  • Keep any evidence (certificates, confirmations) with the log.
  • Tally your hours so you can see your progress against your requirement at a glance.
What’s in the download
A clean, branded log you can print and fill in (PDF), and an editable spreadsheet version (Excel) that adds up your verifiable, non-verifiable and total hours for you. The spreadsheet also includes a second tab with worked example rows, so it doubles as a CPD diary example.
